Yummy stuff

August 8th, 2008

Since I still haven’t unpacked any of my supplies yet from the move, I thought I would share with you one of my favorite rubber stamp companies, Yankiwi. They have a fantastic collection of stamps and some fun embellishments that they call Gorgeous Wee Ones. I have made some polymer clay work and other fun stuff, which you can see in my Flickr Yankiwi page. I personally love their stamps because they are deeply etched and the patterns are fantastic to use on polymer clay. In addition, you can use their GWO as mini molds as you can see here from my Clay Carnival chips.

New place to make art

July 28th, 2008

This week we are moving to my childhood home. We have been planning this move for quite a while now. I can’t believe it’s finally happening. My polymer clay supplies have been pretty much packed up, all ready for the big move. I haven’t touched any clay for about a month now, but I have many ideas brewing up in my head. I so thrilled though to finally have my very own art / craft room to play in. Here is a photo of the room before our move. I have only one wall painted, but will decorate the other walls to match this color scheme.

It was announced earlier in the month that the Clay Carnival will be 4 days and 3 nights, instead of the 3 days and two nights schedule that had been in previous years. I would so love, love, love to attend, but I am not sure if this will be possible. We are spending lots of money for this move, so I’m not sure I will have the budget. I do plan to join the local group out here, so perhaps I can meet up with some like-minded individuals one a month.

Not much else to say, except personal life has been fairly busy. In the meantime, here are a few pictures of some the work that have completed a couple months ago, but didn’t take the time to post here.

Paper Polymer Clay Beads

March 29th, 2008

I’m not sure what to call them, but this was the results of my initial experimentation. I really like them. The only problem that I have is that all the rolls that I made have been way too small to make enough beads to made a full necklace. That is why I made that huge flower roll. I don’t really want these to be focal beads either. The first few were made really loosely, and so I tightened them a bit more in a couple of them.

This was the second group of paper polymer clay beads that I made. These ended up only being one layer around because I ran out of the slices. I also made a big bead as well. I plan to take some more pictures with the light showing through, to give you full effect of the paper.

I only had enough for four beads. I am pleased with the direction that these are going. My initial concerns are that it is difficult to see the pretty designs on the rolls because they are so small (I did make the rolls a little bigger for the last red piece, so you can see the design) and it does really use up a lot of the rolls. I will definitely continue along this route because despite the shortcomings, I am always surprised at the outcome.

Polymer clay + Homemade paper

March 29th, 2008

This is the beginnings of probably many experiments merging polymer clay and my homemade paper that I made several years ago.

On the piece on the left side I thought I would sandwich a small piece of paper between two translucent layers of polymer clay. I did not get it thin enough. Then in the middle piece, I decide to punch a hole to let the paper show through. And finally in the third piece, you see that I punched several holes. That ones reminds me of swiss cheese.

I believe the two outside pieces were Fimo and the middle was Katoclay. The piece on the right was cured in the Ranger Ink melting pot. Also, I forgot to create a tent of aluminum to cover over the pieces while baking in the oven, so that is probably why the center piece yellowed a bit.

Series of experiments, the good, the bad, the ugly

Next, I decided to add color to the pieces. I accidently burnt the middle piece, but I like the glazed look. I know these aren’t pretty, but I want to show my process. I definitely want more paper to show in the pieces, so in the top left side I cut out a bigger hole. Still things aren’t quite right.

If I recall, the top left and bottom right were cured in the Ranger Ink Melting Pot. The ones that I baked in the oven yellowed, except the one I burned. I think because I didn’t put aluminum to cover the pieces.

I decided to make these pieces as well with the multiple holes. I also used a heat gun to add more translucency in the top right side, to allow the paper to shine through. I will have to take more pictures with an underlight. Perhaps placing a light table underneath.

The beginnings of my first huge floral cane

March 27th, 2008

This is the first attempts at making a huge cane. Most of my canes have been probably the size of the center of this flower, but I think it is time that I start big and simple. My current project that I am working on takes a lot of canework, due to the fact that I slice more than one layer of the cane. And so I am only able to make like 6 beads at the most, and this is definitely not enough to make one necklace. It’s barely enough to make a bracelet. I suppose the can be a pendant, but I think it will make a better piece with more than one bead. I can’t wait to see how many beads I will get out of this huge honker.

I finally finished making a photobox to take pictures of my beads, so I hope to get pictures up soon.

A creative journey

March 8th, 2008

I finally decided to start a separate blog for my creative processes in polymer clay. It’s about time, I think. I still need to upload a nice skin. I did download a dozen of them, but still need to fancy them up. But in the meantime, let me just introduce myself to you. I have been playing with Polymer Clay since early 2007. I don’t remember the exact date it was that I discovered this wonderful medium, but I do remember my intense excitement the first time that got my hands on the clay. I seriously had a major adrenal rush. I do remember browsing through a copy of the Stampington Belle Armoire Jewelry and seeing polymer clay.

Here is an image of my first group of canes that I made. The influence of these canes were from some glass pieces that I created in 1997 and these canes were made in April, 2007.

I know, not too pretty, but I was excited, that I just wanted to make something, anything, really. I really do see Polymer Clay more as an art medium that I can use to put the ideas that constantly swim in my brain.
